COMMISSION CASE STUDY: FIVE RECENT PAINTINGS IN THE US AND INDIA
Here at Laasya Art, we frequently assist clients with commission paintings by our artists. As each project is a unique expression of where the artist’s style meets the client’s story, it is always exciting to see what emerges from the collaboration.
We also find that clients are curious about the benefits and possibilities with commissioned artworks. So in this blog, we share the process behind bringing our clients’ visions to life in five recent commissions by artists Basuki Das Gupta, Bharti Prajapati, Anuradha Thakur and Sumanto Chowdhury.
BASUKI DAS GUPTA
Texas, USA
The client loved artist Basuki Das Gupta’s work, particularly in a warmer color palette of reds and yellows. However, these bold colors clashed with the other commission project we had recently completed with the family, which would hang on the opposite wall. We ultimately mixed 5 or 6 colors to create a unique shade of blue that was both warm and understated. The result was mesmerizing, and the final paintings fit seamlessly into the space without overpowering the other artworks.
BHARTI PRAJAPATI
Mumbai, India
The clients sought a painting by artist Bharti Prajapati for a prominent wall in their living room, which was decorated in a neutral color palette. We suggested a scene of women dancing to infuse the room with dynamic energy, and we selected a bright palette of oranges, reds and pinks to add color. We also decided to spread the scene across 3 panels for a more modern look. The clients were delighted with the liveliness of the final painting.
ANURADHA THAKUR
Mumbai, India
The clients commissioned a calming painting for a ‘Zoom wall’ in their study. They responded the most to artist Anuradha Thakur’s paintings, which are known for their brilliant rainbow of colors. We recommended a more focused palette for this painting, choosing yellows, blues and greens that echoed colors already in the decor of the room. The final painting also balances a traditional theme with a contemporary flair.
SUMANTO CHOWDHURY
California, USA
After falling in love with a painting by artist Sumanto Chowdhury in Architectural Digest India, the clients had their hearts set on his work. They were drawn to the dreamy quality of Sumanto’s vibrant world, which transports you to a simpler time. While we looked at the reference image that had caught their attention, we enhanced the surreal vibe of their scene by adding significantly more elements of miniature design and warmer hues. The result is a very sweet villagescape that exudes the innocent magic of life.
BASUKI DAS GUPTA
California, USA
The clients had previously purchased a 4 x 4 foot Devi Ma painting by Basuki Das Gupta for a large wall in their home. However, the painting felt too small in the space, so we recommended adding a panel on each side of the original canvas to form a wider triptych. We worked with Basuki so that the new panels could be used in the future as either standalone paintings or as a diptych. While recreating the exact blue of the original canvas was a challenge, we found a way to make it happen! The final triptych truly achieved a “wow” effect, which the client and her family loved.
