BIOGRAPHY

Art by Sumanto Chowdury

The technicolor landscapes of artist Sumanto Chowdury are filled with candy-colored homes, rolling emerald hills, patches of red earth and sunny pastel skies. The influence of Indian miniature painting is evident in his close attention to architectural details like ornate fences and patterned tiles, as well as the visual depth of his canvases. The resulting scenes suggest a vibrant and distinctly Indian utopia, where people and nature live in harmony.

While he is particularly inspired by the lakes, gardens and architecture of Hyderabad, art by Sumanto Chowdhury mixes in other references based on his travels and memories. The trees of Goa appear alongside the huts of Telangana, and he often incorporates the black and white design building of Santiniketan, where he studied. As he explains, “My works do not always represent only one place, but merge different styles of architecture of different places, various human gestures, local flora and fauna — I try to amalgamate them in one place.”

Sumanto Chowdhury studied Fine Arts in Painting at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan. He then earned his Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Hyderabad. His paintings, sculptures and fine art prints have been exhibited throughout India, and he has received numerous awards from institutions including the South Zone Cultural Center, Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation and Aranya Art Foundation.
