S. SIVABALAN BIOGRAPHY

Artist S. Sivabalan portraitContemporary Indian artist S. Sivabalan’s vibrant, highly realistic paintings transport the viewer into authentic moments of daily life and festivals in rural India. Raised in a historic temple town in Tamil Nadu, his paintings in watercolor and oil aim to express the jubilant mood and visual awe that he experienced in his childhood. His canvases are also noted for the stark contrast of hyper colorful subjects against crisp white backgrounds.

Pride in the customs and culture of India, particularly in the South, is what defines art by S. Sivabalan. From ‘gangireddu’ and decorated elephants walking in processions, to women balancing pots of water on their heads, to vendors stacking their wares on bullock carts, the artist hopes to immortalize such scenes. He explains, “My interest was always with registering paintings which reminds you about our culture, tradition and rural lifestyle. With the fast pace changes we see in our city lifestyle, my paintings would show how people were living for coming generations.”

S. Sivabalan received a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Government college of Fine Arts, Kumbakonam. He has exhibited throughout India, including at government museums in Madurai and Pudukottai, as well as internationally in New York, San Francisco, Singapore and Malaysia.
