F.N. SOUZA BIOGRAPHY

Art by F.N. Souza A founder and key figure of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group, artist Francis Newton “F. N.” Souza was at the forefront of the modernist movement in post-independence India. Defined by moody color palettes and jagged brushstrokes, his emotionally charged canvases explored nudes, grotesque heads, religious scenes and still lifes. He also frequently painted landscapes and cityscapes, typically from his travels or his home state Goa.

Art by F.N. Souza is widely recognized for his distinct combination of elements of traditional Indian art with modernist styles like expressionism and cubism. Born in Goa under Portuguese colonial rule, Souza was profoundly influenced by Catholic imagery, evident in his recurring motifs of Christ and crucifixion as well as sharp geometric shapes that recall stained-glass windows. He was also inspired by the sensuality of South Indian bronzes and the temple reliefs of Khajuraho.

Souza studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art, although he did not graduate from the program but continued self-educating on classical Indian art and European painting. He moved to London in 1949 and to New York City in 1967, where he won the Guggenheim International Award. His work has been exhibited at international museums including Tate Britain in London, The Asia Society in New York and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. Souza passed away in Mumbai in 2002.
