BIOGRAPHY

Esteemed Indian artist and architect Satish Gujral was an important figure in Indian Modernism. Born in pre-partition West Punjab, he became widely known for his iconic “Partition” series of paintings in 1947, which documented the pain and violence of this period. He continued to be interested in the political and social potential of art, and he frequently produced portraits featuring abstracted and finely shaded figures. Gujral’s career ultimately spanned seven decades and a diverse range of mediums, including painting, murals, design and sculptures in metal and wood, until his death in 2020.

Satish Gujral studied at Mayo School of Art and Sir J.J. School of Art, as well as under Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. His work has been exhibited internationally in major museums, such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has also received numerous awards including the Padma Vibhushan, Lalit Kala Akademi Award, Mexican Leonardo da Vinci Award for Lifetime Achievement and Belgian Order of the Crown. In addition to his artistic practice, Gujral designed notable buildings such as Gandhi Institute in Mauritius and the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi.
